A 291-day wait comes to an end as #BullensMagic returns to the Whip City this week and the Starfires set for their eighth season of Futures Collegiate Baseball League action. There will be new faces, a new opponent, and some new promotions, but two things remain the same: the best affordable family fun in Western Massachusetts and a chase for a championship.
The team’s first two games will be Education Day games with special 10:30 a.m. start times. The team officially opens the season on Wednesday, May 27 against the Worcester Bravehearts, and will follow on Thursday, May 28 against the Nashua Silver Knights.
Those games set the table for an incredible Opening Night on Friday, May 29. Not only are the three-time defending FCBL Champion Norwich Sea Unicorns heading to Westfield to start a home-and-home, but fans can expect a special treat on the diamond before the first pitch is thrown. New England Patriots kicker Andrés Borregales will be on hand, kicking footballs from home plate into the outfield for young fans to catch, and will also be available to sign autographs and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. One lucky fan will be selected to escort Borregales to the mound, so arrive early; gates open at 5:30 p.m.
The weekend will be spent on the road; the Starfires visit the Sea Unicorns on Saturday, May 30 for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. Sunday, May 31 will then be the team’s first-ever meeting with the reborn Lowell Spinners at LeLacheur Park, with a 5:00 p.m. first pitch on the schedule.
A new season also brings along a new league website. The FCBL has partnered with PrestoSports to revamp the look and feel of the league’s page, including a new interface for news, enhanced statistics, and more. The league’s schedule page will have links to live stats and broadcast information so you never have to miss a pitch, no matter where you or the Starfires are.
The FCBL has continued its partnership with HUDL to bring you live broadcasts of every game on the FCBL Network. Available on desktop, mobile, and multiple OTT apps, the FCBL Network will carry broadcasts all season long. Fans can purchase passes for a single day or for the full season to get all 210 regular season games plus the postseason. For more information, visit www.fcblnetwork.com.
Seth Dussault returns as the Voice of the Starfires for another season, and this year will be joined by Jack Sargent, a student at Coastal Carolina University, as well as a few special guest broadcasters throughout the summer. Not only will the duo take the airwaves for all of Westfield’s home games, but they will also use the FCBL Network to deliver audio calls of select Starfires road games; when available, those links will also be available on both the FCBL schedule page and by visiting the FCBL Network home page directly.
