Springfield College senior Josh Mayo and Brown University freshman Morrie Fried will play in the FCBL All-Star Game and Home Run Derby, respectively, to be held in Nashua, New Hampshire on Tuesday, July 21.

Both gave Holman Stadium a sneak peek as to why.

Mayo threw 7.1 shutout innings and Fried smashed a two-run home run as part of a 3-0 Westfield Starfires win over the Nashua Silver Knights on Saturday, July 18.

Westfield improves to 16-25 on the season.

The Starfires scored in the opening inning, with Bucknell University junior John Calabrese singling to lead off the game and stealing second. Central Connecticut State University senior Nick Fox then knocked a hit to left to put men at the corners. Two batters later, Louisiana Tech sophomore Easton Sanders hit a grounder to short; Fox was out at second, but Sanders beat out the double play, allowing Calabrese to reach home.

That was all the cushion Mayo needed. Nashua did load the bases in the first, but the Westfield native escaped the jam, and then allowed just two hits over the next six innings.

In the seventh, Fox reached on an error and University of Massachusetts-Amherst junior Vance Bonior followed with a base hit; Fox, however, was thrown out trying to reach third.

Two batters later, Fried came to the plate, and he wasted no time, shooting the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence. It was another tee shot, recorded at 110 miles per hour off the bat, and gave the Starfires a 3-0 lead.

A single and a walk put two men on in the eighth with one out, and Saint Joseph’s College junior Jack Dyer came on in relief. He did hit a batter, but escaped the threat with two flyouts to strand the bases loaded.

A leadoff walk in the ninth gave Nashua brief hope, but University of Connecticut freshman Noah Farrell snuffed it out, sitting down all three batters he faced for the save, striking out two.

Mayo’s final line was 7.1 innings of six-hit shutout pitching, allowing one walk against four punchouts.

Offensively, eight of nine Starfires starters recorded a hit and all nine reached safely at least once; Bonior put together a three-hit showing.

Westfield will play its last pre-All-Star Break game at Norwich on Sunday, July 19 at 1:00 p.m.
