Starfires Split In Nashua

Box Score - Game One
Box Score - Game Two

NASHUA, New Hampshire (July 1, 2023) – The Westfield Starfires split a doubleheader with the Nashua Silver Knights on Saturday, July 1, winning a nine-inning game 6-2 before falling in a seven-inning contest 2-0 at Holman Stadium.

Westfield is now 15-19 in Futures Collegiate Baseball League action.

The game was resumed from an earlier contest which had been suspended due to rain; Nashua opened with runners at the corners and two outs, but Jack McDermott grounded out to end the threat.

In the fifth frame, the Starfires opened the scoring in a big way. Jack Kent and Luke Stephens each singled, and Michael Breen reached on an error. Corey Zientek then hit a grounder to third, pushing Kent home at the expense of Stephens being put out at the hot corner.

A wild pitch then brought Breen in, and Nick Serce singled into the right field corner to score Zientek. Luke Yuhasz followed, smacking the lone extra-base hit of the frame, tripling to right to put Westfield ahead 4-0.

Westfield added two more in the sixth. Kobe Mentzer led off with a walk, and then took third on an error at short that also allowed Kent to reach. Stephens drove Mentzer in, and a double-steal saw Stephens thrown out at second, but Kent scampered home to make it 6-0.

Nashua scored one in the seventh, but that was all the offense the hosts mustered in the first game. Ryan Bailey was the winner, tossing six innings and allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts. Tim Krol closed it out with 2.1 perfect innings, striking out three.

In the second game, offense was at a premium as both teams combined for just seven hits. However, Nashua was able to score twice in the second inning, and that proved sufficient for the split as that was the only scoring in the game.

Westfield next visits the Pittsfield Suns at Wahconah Park for a 4:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, July 2. The team returns to the Richards Jewelers Diamond at Billy Bullens Field on Wednesday, July 5 at 11:00 a.m., also against the Suns.
