BURLINGTON, Vermont (June 3, 2022) – The Westfield Starfires lost a back-and-forth matchup, 3-2, against the Vermont Lake Monsters in Futures Collegiate Baseball League action on Friday, June 3.
The Starfires are now 7-2 on the season.
Both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning. Westfield scored first as Cavan Brady reached on an error, and ultimately scored on an error as well with Ryan Molinari at the dish. However, in the home half of the inning, Jimmy Evans drove a two-run shot over the wall to flip the deficit to a 2-1 lead.
The Starfires quickly countered in the next half-inning, as Patrick D’Amico doubled. Daniel Burnett reached on an error that moved Burnett to third, and a walk and hit batter pushed him home. However, the Starfires left the bases loaded from there.
The deciding run came in the bottom of the seventh as George Cooper singled and swiped second before Evans drove him home with a single through the middle. The Starfires put the tying run aboard in both the eighth and ninth but could not bring it home.
Shayne Audet pitched six innings, striking out eight while allowing two runs on four hits for the Starfires. Daniel Manente threw the final two frames, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Wyatt Cameron earned the win for Vermont, closing out the final 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts to just two hits.
