BURLINGTON, Vermont (June 2, 2022) – The Westfield Starfires fell for the first time in 2022, as a big first inning power the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 5-3 victory and snapped Westfield’s seven-game winning streak in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League matchup on Thursday, June 2.
The Starfires now sit at 7-1, and remain in first place in the FCBL.
Westfield struck first, as Luca Giallongo led off with a single and swiped second, ultimately coming home on a sacrifice fly by Cooper Johnson. However, the Lake Monsters erupted with five in the home half of the inning as they compiled six hits, ending with a two-run double by Andrew Kanellis, although Max Gebauer was cut down at home on the play to end the inning.
Johnson, Patrick D’Amico, and Noah Campanelli rang up three straight singles to start the fourth, with Johnson coming home, but the Starfires could not bring in any more runs in the inning; the team likewise added a run in the fifth as Giallongo reached on an error and was brought home thanks to back-to-back hits by Johnson and D’Amico. That ended the scoring in the game, however.
Westfield State’s Ryan Donahue took the loss, allowing the five first-inning runs and 10 hits total, walking three and striking out two. Lake Monster reliever Liam Reiner earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing one unearned run and two hits with three strikeouts.
The teams battle again on Friday, June 3 at 6:35 p.m. in Burlington, Vermont.
