Five members of the Westfield Starfires were selected to the Futures League roster for the Northeast Prospects Game, the league announced on Monday, June 29.
The contest is a showcase of talent where draft-eligible FCBL players will face off against the Northeast Scout Team, a collection of other high school and collegiate talent from throughout New England.
Pitchers Noah Farrell and Thomas Pirog will be joined by infielders Aidan Barclay, Morrie Fried, and Ryan Ventrelle as Westfield’s representatives.
“I’m happy for our guys. They’re excellent players who have earned the chance to showcase their talent. It’s a tremendous opportunity,” said Starfires manager Paul Bonfiglio.
Farrell is the newest Starfire, making his debut on June 25 at Bullens Field, where he faced two batters and did not allow a hit in 0.1 innings. The six-foot-four right-hander, who also played some first base for Dubois Area Senior High School in Pennsylvania, is committed to the University of Connecticut for the upcoming fall.
Pirog is a second-year Starfire, and the sophomore-to-be at Keene State College has been brilliant in his eight appearances, including a pair of starts. In 17.2 innings, he boasts a 1.53 earned run average and 23 strikeouts, holding opponents to just 0.79 walks plus hits per inning pitched. He fanned a season-best six in just three frames on June 16 against the Worcester Bravehearts.
Barclay, heading into his sophomore year at Cornell University, has been a key contributor for the Starfires, mostly at first base although he has played at second in a few games. He is hitting .263 in 23 games, including an 11-game hit streak from June 6-20 and a 16-game on-base streak from June 6 that is still active.
Fried has dazzled since joining the Starfires from Pittsfield High School, and is preparing to head to Brown University. Among his eight-game showing for the Starfires was a two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the top of the ninth at New Britain on June 18, flipping a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 lead in an eventual 9-8 victory for Westfield. He plays third base and the outfield, although he has exclusively been at the hot corner for the Starfires thus far.
Ventrelle, who also joined the Whip City squad recently, recently graduated Fairfield College Prep and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut for 2025-26. The left-handed hitting shortstop has three hits in his first ten at-bats in a Starfires uniform across four games.
The Northeast Scout Team is led by New York Yankees Northeast Area Scout Matt Hyde, who was critical in the discovering and drafting of two FCBL stars – Ben Rice and Cam Schlittler – who are now among the top players in Major League Baseball. Worcester Bravehearts Director of Player Personnel Alex Dion, who was the team’s field manager from 2019 to 2024, will lead the bench for the FCBL team.
The game will be held at Norwich, Connecticut’s Dodd Stadium, home of the Norwich Sea Unicorns, on Tuesday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m.
