Starfires to close out 2020 on Wednesday night

by Corey Poulin

On Wednesday August 19, the Westfield Starfires will play for the final time this summer at home against the presumptive Number Two seed for the FCBL Championship Series, the Nashua Silver Knights, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Jeff Taylor is expected to get the ball and be the starting pitcher for the Starfires against the Silver Knights tough lineup, who lead the league in team batting. Taylor is 4-0 on the season with a 1.38 ERA in five games pitched this season, having started in four of his five outings. His record includes a 1-0 shutout against the Brockton Rox on August 6.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Infielder Drew DeMartino leads the Starfires in batting average at .305. Outfielder Andre Marrero can be an x-factor as he has proven to come up clutch at home by showcasing the long ball with four of his five homeruns this season coming at Bullens Field.

Despite missing the playoffs, there were plenty of highlights and Starfires history made in 2020 including being the first FCBL team to win a game televised on NESN.

On August 3, behind a stellar pitching performance by West Springfield’s own Nick Dombkowski who pitched 6 innings of no-hit baseball with 9 strikeouts and only 3 walks, the Starfires shutout the New Britain Bees 2-0.

Dombkowski and fellow Starfires ace pitcher Chase Jeter were nominees for the FCBL Pitcher of the Year award for the 2020 season.

Individual team awards (MVP, Rookie of the Year) will be given out on Wednesday night in a pre-game ceremony.

You can also watch the game live on the FCBL Network.
